Topic Outline
- (1) Overview of the Internet
- This class will start with an overview of the Internet. We will discuss the history of the Internet, how the Internet works, and some of the protocols used on the Internet. We will also talk about different ways to connect to the Internet, and discuss what a URL is.
- (2) The World Wide Web
- The "WWW" is not synonymous with the Internet. The World Wide Web is only a part of the Internet. We will discuss what exactly it is, how to use it, what tools to use with it, and how to search it.
- (3) Multimedia
- Multimedia is what makes the Internet more than just straight text, or even text and images. Different types of Multimedia include audio, video, things like the Flash Player, Shockwave, and more. We will discuss what a "plug in" is, and how to install and use one.
- (4) Electronic Mail (email)
- Email is one of the most used components of the Internet. Email is used all over the world to send messages and even files to other people. We will discuss what email is, how it works, and some of the different clients used to access it.
- (5) Newsgroups, FTP and Telnet
- These three components of the Internet will be discussed, along with how to access them, different ways to use them, how they work and tips on how to use them better.
- (6) Netiquette
- Often overlooked, 'net etiquette or "netiquette" is a very important thing to understand. It is important to know how to properly say what you want to say, without looking foolish. We will discuss proper netiquette as is pertains to different components of the Internet.
- (7) Other Internet Activities
- Besides the above topics, there are numerous other things that you can do on the Internet, like instant messaging, file sharing, multiplayer gaming, setting a clock, and more. We will touch on these activities and discuss how to use them.
Considerations
Please consider turning off any cell phones and pagers while in lectures or seminars. If you need to be available (on call for work, for example) please set your cell/pager to vibrate. Also, please remember that checking email, typing instant messages, or surfing the Web may be distracting to others.
