ISSD Project

Request For Proposal

Executive Summary

Lanoie.com requires a new Web site to meet the needs of the XHTML portion of the University of Winnipeg's ISSD program. The site will consist of 5 static XHTML 1.0 Strict pages on the topic of your choice. The web site will be based on a fictitious company you create.

You may be able to continue to use this site when you are doing the Online Databases project. In that course, you will be able to add functionality to your site like collecting and storing user information, managing products or content, interacting with clients online, and other related tasks.

Qualifications

Only individuals who are currently enrolled and in good standing with the ISSD program will be considered for this project. An understanding of the following topics are required:

Description of the Development Process

The final 'live' date is when everything is actually due for submission. If intermediate milestones are not met, the overall project might fall behind and the final date might be missed. There are penalties for late submissions of the final project and milestones.

Project Stages and Milestones
November 23
Request for Proposal officially released (this document).
November 28
Response to RFP due.

This is a proposal of what your project will be about, who your target audience is, what you hope to accomplish (your goals for the site), and things of this nature. Base your project around a fake company. For marking purposes, you will submit a PDF on your final project CDs as well as two professionally prepared printed copies. However, you will also present a basic (stapled, draft) copy to the instructor to get feedback and comments at this time.

You are allowed to consult any resources you need to create this document, including other students, project managers for Web companies, Internet resources, or text books. You may want to search for documents about 'Request for Proposals' or 'Request for Quotation' to help you determine what you need to define in this document, in addition to the research that you have already completed on project management.

Some items that should be included in your proposal:

  • Description of your project.
A paragraph or two that describes what topic/company/purpose your Web site project will have or be about.
  • Goals of the site.
What is it you want to do with the site? What message or purpose do you hope to achieve? How will you determine if you are successful? This could range from a few paragraphs up to half a page.
  • Target audience discussion.
Discuss who your primary (and maybe secondary) target audience is. Discuss what considerations you will need to factor (age, geography, income) to effectively communicate with your users. This could range from a few paragraphs up to a page.
  • Story board of all pages, with a brief description of each page.
Include a half page graphic, story boarding how each page relates to each other and a short paragraph of what topic each page will be on. This should be a page in total.
  • Budget (Cost of two CDs, printing and binding of documentation, misc expenses).
The budget for this project is not much money, but this is a step you need to do in the real world. This can consist of a paragraph and a short list or table.
  • Time line (use the RFP dates).
  • Background of your 'company' and qualifications.
This can be real or fake, and can be about a half a page.
  • References/examples/URLs of any previous Web related work would be helpful in the real world but not required for this RFP.
November 29
Initial project scoping meetings between your instructor and each student individually to go over each project and discuss suggestions and feedback.
December 1
Design Mockups due.

This is a .psd file with all 5 pages available as well as some browser chrome sets for your target audience browsers. A Wire frame is nice, but not required. This can be based on your Photoshop and Design project, or started fresh from scratch. It will be submitted for marks on your final project CD.

December 9
Beta testing stage begins.

At this point, your pages should essentially be complete. You can have your friends testing the pages in case you missed anything.

December 12
Site officially goes 'live' on the Salsa server. The URL of your home page should be http://salsa.uwdce.ca/~username/issdXX/project/index.html. If you go for some of the project bonus marks, you can use a .php extention for your filenames. XX is your ISSD intake number.

All deliverables are due:

  • Two copies of your project proposal (professionally presented) and in colour.
  • A time sheet printout recording how long it took you to do each task, with a total of the hours spent related to the project. This will help you in the future when doing estimates. You should include this as an appendix to your proposal.
  • An invoice, made out to Lanoie.com c/o The University of Winnipeg for the total hours your worked on your project at a billable rate of $0.00/hr. You can use this in the future for real invoices. You can create your own invoice or use a template. This should be included as an appendix to your proposal.
  • Two copies of your project CD (professionally presented) with the following directory structure:
    • Project Documents Folder (your time sheet, invoice, proposal document (PDFs) with target audience discussion, etc).
    • Project Folder
      • index.html
      • styles Folder
      • images Folder
      • Marking Folder
        • Marks.html
      • any other .html pages
      • any other required folders
    • Design Mockup Folder

Payment Terms

The student will be paid for this project in the form of marks, as outlined in the Project Marking Rubric file.
