Photoshop provides two features to help you with the accuracy of your text: the Check Spelling command and Find and Replace command.
Checking Spelling
You can check the spelling of individual words, selected blocks of text, all text on a layer or text on every layer.
- Select your language of choice from the pop-up menu in the Character panel. This determines the dictionary that Photoshop will use when performing the spelling check.
- To specify the text you want to spell check:
- One word: place insertion point in the word.
- Block of text: select the text.
- One layer: click on the text layer.
- All layers: no selection required.
- Go to Edit > Check Spelling. The Check Spelling dialog will open if any errors are encountered.

- Uncheck Check All Layers if you only want to check the active layer.
- The first word that Photoshop doesn't recognize will appear in the Not in Dictionary field. It will also be highlighted in your image document. The most likely replacement will be suggested in the Change To field and alternatives will be listed in the Suggestions field. Choose an action by clicking on one of the buttons in the dialog (described below).
- When all the suspect words have been dealt with, a dialog will appear saying that the spell check is complete. Click OK and if you don't want to see the dialog after future spell checks, enable the Don't show again check box.
- Done
- To end the spell check before all the words have been checked, click the Done button.
- Ignore
- This tells Photoshop not to change the spelling of the word. It will move onto the next word, if it finds one.
- Ignore All
- This tells Photoshop to ignore all other words with the same spelling during the current spell check.
- Change
- This will substitute whichever spelling is displayed in the Change To field, which also will be highlighted in the Suggestions list. You can also type your own spelling in the Change To field and apply it.
- Change All
- This will substitute whichever spelling is displayed in the Change To field to all occurrences of the selected word.
- Add
- This will add the word displayed in the Not in Dictionary field to the chosen dictionary. It will prevent the word from being selected as a misspelled word in the future.
Find and Replace Text
This feature lets you find specific text in a selection, a layer or all layers and then replace it with different text.
- Make a selection of text to narrow down the searchable area or click on a text layer.
- Go to Edit > Find and Replace Text. A dialog box will open:

- Enter the text you want to find in the Find What field.
- If you want to replace the text, enter the replacement in the Change To field.
- Set the search option check boxes (descriptions below).
- Click on the buttons to perform the desired actions (descriptions below).
- When all occurrences of the specified text have been found, a dialog will appear saying that the operation is complete. The number of replacements made will be displayed. Click OK and if you don't want to see the dialog after future Find and Replace searches, enable the Don't show again check box.
Find and Replace Check Boxes
- Search All Layers
- When enabled, all layers will be searched for the Find What text. When disabled, only the active layer will be searched. This option will be greyed out if some text has been selected in the document.
- Forward
- When enabled, the search will be performed from top to bottom of the document. To go backwards/up, disable the check box.
- Case Sensitive
- When enabled, only text that matches the case of the Find What text will be found. For example, if you were searching for "Earth" with Case Sensitive enabled, "earth" would be skipped over.
- Whole Word Only
- When enabled, the search text must not be part of another word for it to be found. For example, if you were searching for "body" using Whole Word Only, the text "anybody" would be skipped.
Find and Replace Buttons
- Done
- Click Done to terminate the operation before it is completed. If you only want to find text and not replace it, use the Done button after you've found the text.
- Find Next
- This will search for the first occurrence of the search text or the next occurrence if text has already been found.
- Change
- Once an occurrence of the search text has been found, you can replace it with the Change To text by clicking this button.
- Change All
- Instead of finding and changing instances of text one by one, you can click the Change All button to replace all occurrences of the search text.
- Change/Find
- Once the search text has been found, clicking Change/Find will replace the text and go to the next occurrence of the search text.
Editing Type Summary
- The Check Spelling command will compare the text you've created with a dictionary in the language of your choice.
- As Photoshop is performing a spell check it will alert you to words that aren't in the dictionary. You can accept alternate spellings that are suggested, skip over the questionable word, or add the word to the dictionary so you won't be prompted in the future when that word in encountered.
- The Find and Replace command can be used to find specific text and will replace it with the text you specify.
