Selections

Converting a Path to a Selection

Once you have created a path, you can create a selection from it. There are two ways to create a selection: using the current settings or specifying different settings. We'll try out both.

Practice Exercise: Converting a Path to a Selection

  1. Assuming you still have shapes.psd open, go to the History panel and click on the snapshot you took from the previous lecture. This will restore your oval path.

Convert a Path to a Selection Using the Current Settings

Using this option will create a new selection that is anti-aliased.

  1. Clicking the Path as Selection button Click on the Work Path in the Paths panel to select it.
  2. Click on the Load Path as a Selection button at the bottom of the panel.

  3. Path converted to a selection Your selection should look something like this:

Convert a Path to a Selection With Different Settings

  1. Switch to the History panel and click on the snapshot again to restore the path or use the Undo shortcut Ctrl-Z (Cmd-Z).
  2. Work Path selected Make sure the Work Path is still selected in the Paths panel.
  3. Make Selection dialog box Click the panel menu button and choose Make Selection....
  4. The Make Selection dialog will open with options for converting to a selection.
Feather Radius
The Feather Radius is the amount of blending that will be applied to the selection. The blending will help give a softer appearance to your image selection.
Anti-aliased
When enabled, this option will smooth hard corners and edges of your selection.
Operation
If your image has no active selections in it, your only option will be New Selection. If you already have a selection that is active in the image, you can choose between Add to Selection, Subtract from Selection or Intersect with Selection.
  1. Type in a Feather Radius value of 2 pixels and click OK.
  2. Path converted to a selection The resulting selection border (marching ants) will look identical to the one in the previous method. You can close this file without saving.
  3. comparing both results after the selections have been filled We filled both selections with green and deselected them to demonstrate the results of the different settings.
