Photoshop

Retouching and Editing

Overview

Now that you're familiar with the fundamentals of Photoshop, you'll be able to learn retouching and editing functions by working through a variety of practice exercises, which include retouching photographs.

If you'd like to download all eight of the images used in this module at once, you can download a .zip file for the PC (471 K) or .sit file for the Macintosh (465 K). You may also download them individually on the lecture pages, if you prefer. Once the file has finished downloading to your computer, extract the files from the .zip or .sit file using a decompression utility program like WinZip (PC) or Stuffit Expander (Macintosh). You should now have a folder called RetouchingAndEditing containing files named apple_tree.gif, art_history.jpg, bird.jpg, man.jpg, old_image.jpg, shell.psd, vase.jpg, and woman.jpg.

Here is a summary of the topics in this module:

(1) Rulers, Grids and Guides
Before we get into the retouching tools and editing commands, we'll go over using rulers, grids, and guides. These are extremely valuable options to assist you in laying out your image content with accuracy.
(2) Ruler Tool
The Ruler tool measures distances and angles in an image. It can also be used to straighten photographs and other images.
(3) Blur Tool Set
The Blur tool set is ideal for retouching selective areas of an image. The tool set consists of the Blur, Smudge, and Sharpen tools. You'll get a chance to try out all three of them on portrait images.
(4) Clone Stamp Tool Set
The Clone Stamp tool is used to copy a sample from one area of an image and paint it onto another area. It's very useful in retouching images, especially photographs. You will retouch an old photo in a practice exercise using the Clone Stamp tool. This lecture also covers the Pattern Stamp tool which applies pattern presets using paint strokes.
(5) History Brush Tool Set
This tool set consists of the History Brush and Art History Brush tools. Both let you paint on an image using a snapshot or state from the History panel as the paint source. The Art History Brush lets you paint with stylized brush strokes and textures. This lecture contains a practice exercise for each tool.
(6) Eraser Tool Set
The Eraser tools can be used to touch up images and extract foreground objects from their backgrounds by removing the background pixels. This tool set includes the Eraser, Background Eraser and Magic Eraser tools. Three practice exercises will acquaint you with these tools.
(7) Dodge Tool Set
This tool set is helpful for retouching photographic images. In a series of three short exercises, you'll learn to use the Dodge, Burn and Sponge tools on a portrait.
(8) Healing Brush Tool Set
The Healing Brush and Patch tools are used to fix flaws in an image by applying pixels copied from another area of the image. You'll fix up a flawed image with the tools in two practice exercises.
(9) Edit Menu Commands
This lecture covers the Copy, Copy Merged, Paste, Paste Into and Clear commands as they pertain to pixel selections.
(A) Matting
The Layer menu contains a submenu of three Matting commands: Defringe, Remove White Matte, and Remove Black Matte. Each option provides a different method of removing fringe pixels from the anti-aliased edges of shapes on a transparent layer. In this lecture, you'll set up a multi-layered image to try out the three Matting commands and it will give you practice in copying, pasting and inverting selections.
(B) Transformations
Transformations such as scaling, rotating and skewing can be applied to selected pixels, an entire layer, linked layers, and vector shapes. All of the transformations will be covered in a practice exercise.
(C) Changing the Canvas Size
The Canvas Size command adds to, or subtracts from, the width and height of the document window. A practice exercise will show you the ropes.
(D) Cropping and Trimming Images
Images can be cropped with the Crop tool, Crop command or Trim command. Each works in a different way, as you'll see as you work through practice exercises.
