Exploring the Toolbox

The Flash 5 Toolbox Flash Toolbox provides tools for selecting, drawing, and navigating around the Stage. It is divided up into four sections.

Tools - for drawing, adding text, applying colour to fills and strokes, and for selecting and modifying objects.

View - tools for scrolling and zooming in and out of the Stage and Work Area.

Colours - for applying colours to text and shapes.

Options - modifiers that provide additional capabilities to the tools.

The Toolbox can be moved, minimized to its title bar, or hidden just like any other panel. It doesn't have a resize option, however. Each of the tools in the Tools and View sections can be accessed by clicking on them as well as with a one-letter key command. If you hold your cursor over these tools for a second, a tooltip will appear telling you the name of the tool and its shortcut command. If you don't have tooltips enabled, you can do so by going to Edit > Preferences > General tab and then click on the box beside "Show Tooltips" so there's an X displayed. Click OK.

Flash MX/MX 2004 Toolbox

The Toolbox in Flash MX and MX 2004 is basically the same as the Flash 5 toolbox, but it contains 2 extra tools (added with Flash MX), and a few options have been changed. We will be looking more closely at these as we go along.

For the most part, it is just a slightly more colorful and visually appealing Toolbox. Pictured at the left is the Flash MX 2004 Toolbox, with the two new tools, the Scale tool and the Fill Transform tool, circled in red. We will talk about these in more detail later on.

Exploring the Toolbox Summary

The Toolbox contains tools for drawing, selecting objects and navigating the Stage. It consists of four areas: Tools, View, Colours, and Options. The Options section contains 'modifiers' which are used in conjunction with the tools. Each of the tools in the Tools and View sections can be accessed with a one-letter key command that is displayed in a tooltip.

The Flash MX and MX 2004 is basically unchanged from Flash 5, but contains new buttons and an updated look.
