Please read the introduction page before starting this course. It has useful information you should know.
To do this course, you will need to have Flash installed on your system. You can purchase Photoshop from the Adobe Flash Web site.
If you want to use a limited 30 day evaluation copy, you can download it from the Adobe Trial site.
Class Lectures
- (1) Flash Overview
- The first thing we need to do is give a brief overview of Flash including its applications on the World Wide Web, the Flash workflow, and the concept of vector graphics.
- (2) Work Environment
- Familiarize yourself with the different parts of the Flash work environment so that you can proceed to the next step with confidence. Here, we cover the Stage, Timeline, layers, scenes, panels and setting movie properties. You'll even get a shot at creating your first animation.
- (3) Toolbox
- A good working knowledge of the Flash Toolbox is essential for drawing and manipulating the many graphic elements that you will be adding to your movies.
- (4) Colour
- In this section learn all you need to know about using and creating colour and how to manage colour palettes to optimize your workflow.
- (5) Working With Objects
- The next step is to learn how to manage objects once they are on the Stage. This section covers moving, alignment, grouping, and transformations, among other things.
- (6) Symbols
- Understanding symbols and instances and using them effectively is the single most important skill that you can learn in Flash.
- (7) Animation
- Effective use of animation adds visual interest and impact to Flash movies. This section teaches the three methods of animation available in Flash as well as how to preview and edit animations.
- (8) Text
- There are many ways that text can be formatted to create a great-looking layout. As well, transformations can be applied and characters can be reshaped to add visual interest.
- (9) Importing Images
- Vector and bitmap images that have been created in other applications can be imported into Flash. This section discusses the procedure for importing images and deals with the different ways that bitmap images can be modified within Flash.
- (a) Masks
- Masks provide endless opportunities for creating special effects in Flash. This section primarily consists of a series of hands-on exercises to acquaint you with the possibilities for using masks.
- (b) Sound
- Sound adds another dimension to the Flash experience. Music can convey a mood and navigational sounds can enhance a site's usability. This section explores digital sound and how to optimize it for playback.
- (c) Publishing
- After your movie is finished, you need to test and optimize it. Once you've made it as small and efficient as possible, set up various Publishing options and then publish the files.
- (d) Introduction to ActionScript
- The way to add interactivity to your Flash movies is through the use of ActionScript. You'll create a small interactive movie with navigation, buttons and a simple preloader.
Notes about Windows and Macintosh
Throughout the course, commands for PC and Macintosh computers are included. The PC commands will appear first, followed by the Macintosh commands in parentheses like this:
- Open new document: Ctrl + N (Cmd + N)
- Save: Ctrl + S (Cmd + S)
