Assignment 2: Data Modeling and Design

For this assignment, you will continue developing the data model you began in assignment 1. The goal of this assignment is to develop an E-R diagram of the Customer/Product/Invoice part of your company's data model.

  1. Now that you have a developed a product table, normalize it to third normal form (if required).
  2. As you did in assignment 1, determine all the fields that are required for your customer and invoice tables and organize them appropriately into normalized tables. Be sure to consider all possible attributes.
  3. Lay out a data model for the tables involved so far.
    • Show all the required tables and field names for each table.
    • Identify primary keys, foreign keys and relationships including cardinality. This can be done using a legend (i.e. bold is primary key, italic is foreign, etc.), or also by using acronyms (i.e. PK and FK)

You are welcome to use any reasonable business rules you like but you must state them.

Use the example data model you received in class as a layout guideline. You can turn the assignment in either by email or on paper, however, if you use paper, your presentation must be neat with ruled lines and clearly printed text.

Be sure to be thorough with this assignment. Again, it is impossible to identify all the possible areas in which marks may be deducted, however, here are a few common areas which should be given special attention:

Maximum Mark: 20/20
